A closer look at companies executing leadership excellence
Open a bottle of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Liquid Soap, and you’ll be taking part of a story that dates back over 150 years. It’s a story that began with a family of soapmakers in the Jewish community of Heilbronn, Germany. The story includes the holocaust, an escape from a Chicago mental institution, an attempted crucifixion on a bridge in 1945, Woodstock, and, well, it’s a complex epic that has passed through five generations of the Bronner family.
Today, the company is led by David and Michael Bronner, grandsons of Founder, Emanuel Bronner. They embrace their founder’s enigmatic life, and vision of ridding the world of hate in favor of an “All-One” philosophy. You’ll find that vision written in small type on the label of every bottle and bar of Dr. Bronner’s Soap sold.
Under David and Michael’s leadership, the brand has grown from $4 million in 1998 to nearly $100 million in annual revenue. The brothers have helped establish Dr. Bronner’s as a sustainable leader in the natural products industry and continued their family’s issue-oriented activism reputation into the 21st century. In 2000, Dr. Bronner’s became one of the first body care brands to formulate with hemp seed oil, and in 2003, the company’s products became certified under the USDA National Organic Program.
