Welcome to the sixty-first issue of CEE News!
I’ve dedicated much of this space in past issues of CEE News to sharing about our annual Re:Imagine Leadership Summit. I’ve talked about how we’re preparing for the Summit, what some of the topics are, who is speaking, and what we hope you’ll take away. This year’s Summit is just three weeks away. We won’t be holding it in the conference space as originally planned, because of…you know.
Of course, we’re disappointed that we’ll lose the kinetic energy that happens when we gather in the same physical space. But shifting from in-person to an online format has enabled us to expand beyond the physical limits of a conference room. It’s enabled us to add pre- and post-Summit events, and build a choose-your-own-adventure style program unlike anything we’ve ever done before.

Welcome to the sixtieth issue of CEE News!
If you’ve not had a chance to attend our company’s annual Re:Imagine Leadership Summit, I’m inviting you to make an exception this year. (And, if you’ve already registered, you know that you’re in for an amazing experience that extends far beyond the typical day of “talking head” lectures.) It’s virtual, affordable, and packed with choose-your-own-adventure options to give you the flexibility to participate in the content that matters to you most.
We’re starting with a session on the afternoon of September 23rd called, The Bottom Line on Bias in the Workplace. I will lay a foundation with a short TED-style talk about the neuroscience of bias. The talk is based on the fascinating childhood experience of a Stanford professor and her work to uncover the hidden prejudice that shapes what we see, think, and do.

Welcome to the fifty-ninth issue of CEE News!
At Center for Executive Excellence, our mission is to take you from what is to what is possible. Whether we’re helping leaders implement culture transformation, helping teams build trust, or coaching individual executives to accelerate professional growth, our goal is to offer our expertise to effect positive change. That’s our wheelhouse. That’s our safe space.
Today, we’re stepping out of our safe space because the collective what is is broken. To move from what is to what is possible, we must stand up for one another as members of the human race. We must stop ignoring the fact that the human race has devolved into a competition for domination based on skin color. We can no longer see something like the senseless killing of George Floyd, offer thoughts and prayers to the family, and retreat to our circle of safety.

Welcome to the fifty-eighth issue of CEE News!
I woke up this morning with a knot in my stomach. I’m usually pretty good at compartmentalizing things that I cannot control and what is within my power to manage.
But, at 4:05 a.m., images were looping in my head of George Floyd begging for his life on Monday and the Minneapolis police station in flames three nights later. Images that show the worst of what can happen when we lack the kind of leadership that helps us navigate the path between chaos and control. Before sitting down to write this dispatch, I picked up where I’d left off in Leadership in Turbulent Times, the book I’ve been reading these days to find leadership inspiration and historical perspective. In the book, author Doris Kearns Goodwin profiles Presidents Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, and Lyndon Johnson.

Welcome to the fifty-seventh issue of CEE News!
One of the most challenging things about life these days is the ability to choose how we spend our time. Suddenly, the routines that we relied on to navigate our days have been stripped away. We’ve been thrown off the well-rutted trails that helped dictate when to rise, what to wear, how to contribute, and what to do when we need a break. Then the wheels came off the frame. And each day, we choose anew.
Whether we’re on the front lines, or doing our part by staying at home, we’re all trying to navigate the path between anxiety and appreciation as we do what we can to be productive members of the human race. It is against this backdrop that I have been reading Leadership in Turbulent Times, by Doris Kearns Goodwin.

Welcome to the fifty-fifth issue of CEE News!
Picture a leader. Do you see a woman? If not, you aren’t alone. A study published in the Academy of Management Journal confirms that getting recognized as a leader is more difficult for women than for men.
Yet, history is filled with women who defied the norms and persisted in claiming their leadership role. In honor of Women’s History Month, I’m dedicating my message this month to Dolores Huerta, Civil Rights Activist and Co-Founder of the United Farm Workers.
