Question: I’m a new manager of a small team at a nonprofit. We are careful with our overhead spending which means that we’re chronically understaffed. I really struggle with delegation because it takes longer to teach people and get the quality results that I’m looking for. I’ve fallen into the “I’ll just do it myself” trap and can’t get my own work done. How do I dig myself out?

Question: My former mentor has offered me an opportunity to work for her company at a much higher level and a salary to match. I wasn’t expecting this, but was intrigued and felt that I had to tell my current boss. His response was to give me a counteroffer with a huge raise and a bonus plan. I love my job, but am worried that I’ve broken my bond of loyalty and will always be a suspected flight risk. I’m torn. Is taking a counteroffer the kiss of death for my career?

Question: I am the HR Director for a privately-owned company in Atlanta. The CEO’s wife, son, and daughter are all employees. The daughter reports to me. She’s chronically late for work, surfs the internet, shops online nearly every day, and is generally unproductive and disruptive. What’s worse, she tells her parents stories about people at work that the CEO asks me to investigate which often turn out to be untrue or half true, at best.
I’ve expressed my frustration to the CEO several times, and told him that I can’t ignore her behavior any longer. At first, he suggested that I find another position for her in the company. Finally, he agreed to let me make the decision. Moving her to another role would be handing my problem to someone else – someone who may not feel comfortable telling the CEO how she’s working out. Bottom line. I need to let her go. Can you give me some tips on how to handle this as delicately as possible?

Question: For the past two years, I have been working on a special project for the CEO. With a small team reporting to me, we opened three new offices around the world and more than doubled our workforce. The work was grueling, but I believed that the CEO would continue to recognize my efforts and reward me with advancement. When the project closed last month, I was told that I’m no longer reporting to the CEO and my staff would be reassigned. I was also told that it’s not personal, but simply a reorganization. I feel like I’ve been benched from the “A” team. Should I update my resume, or accept my new role?
