Message From Our Founder

Welcome to the fifty-fifth issue of CEE News! Picture a leader. Do you see a woman? If not, you aren’t alone. A study published in the Academy of Management Journal confirms that getting recognized as a leader is more difficult for women than for men. Yet, history is filled with women who defied the norms and persisted in claiming their leadership role. In honor of Women’s History Month, I’m dedicating my message this month to Dolores Huerta, Civil Rights Activist and Co-Founder of the United Farm Workers.  (more…)

Sticky solutions to your everyday business challenges Question: Three weeks ago, I started a position as the Director of an underperforming sales team.  I was brought in because of my background in delivering results, but I’m already feeling pushback when I try to share my ideas about changes that need to be made.  Do you have any advice for how to gain the traction I need to get the results I was brought in to make? Business in Focus: NADA

A closer look at companies executing leadership excellence . According to the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization, 1.3 billion tons of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted each year.  In Canada, 58% of all food produced is wasted, according to a report by the food bank Second Harvest. Nada, Vancouver’s first zero-waste grocery store, was founded by Alison Carr and Brianne Miller.  As a marine biologist, Miller witnessed the mass of plastics swirling in the oceans, most of which was tied to food packaging. She realized the grocery store system was broken, and asked a ...

Message From Our Founder

Welcome to the fifty-fourth issue of CEE News! Like many of you, I’ve been dreading the angst that comes every four years with the election of a new president of the United States. This year’s election season is embedded in an age when voters are feeling chronically untethered, anxious about an uncertain future, and further than ever from being able to talk about even once-safe topics like the weather. Part of me wants to engage in dialogue on social media with people whose opinions differ than mine. Part of me wants to keep my opinions to myself so that I don’t lose whatever tenuous ...

Sticky solutions to your everyday business challenges Question: I’m almost six months into a new job and one of the few female sales people on the team. I keep comparing myself to the men when delivering presentations.  I feel like I’m losing my authentic voice along with my confidence. Do you have any recommendations for how to regain my confidence as a new member of a male dominated team? (more…)

Business in Focus: Publix Super Markets

A closer look at companies executing leadership excellence . If you start a new business this year, can you imagine it still thriving in the year 2110? 90 years ago, George Jenkins opened the first Publix Food Store in Winter Haven, Florida. Today, the business thrives not because of ping pong tables or kombucha on tap, but because of the enduring philosophy of treating people with dignity and giving them a stake in the company’s success. The Publix Super Markets of 2020 is the largest employee-owned grocery chain in the United States fueled by over 200,000 dedicated women and ...

Message From Our Founder

Welcome to the fifty-third issue of CEE News! Chances are, the turn of the decade has you thinking about how to be your best self this year.  Doing so likely means taking stock of the rote habits in your life that are causing a drag on your energy. Simple enough in theory. Yet, simple is rarely simplistic. The 19th century philosopher William James opined that all of our lives are but a mass of habits. Research published in a 2006 study found that about 40% of our daily action is habitual, which is still a good chunk of time spent in mindless behavior. And that was nearly 15 years ago. ...

Sticky Solutions

Sticky solutions to your everyday business challenges Question: Last year, I went home most days feeling like I was busy but that I hadn’t accomplished anything important. Even on days that I’d intentionally cleared my calendar to work on a big project, I would still get highjacked by Slack messages and “quick questions.” I don’t want to seem like I’m not a team player, but what can I do to stop feeling busy all the time without having anything to show for it?
